Cause I Am An American Girl | As Seen on

Guys, not sure if I’ve mentioned it enough times yet, but I am a blogger over at DiyReady.comWhat’s that!? Yes, DIYREADY.COMWell for the fourth I was inspired to DIY my own little getup. So I begged my bosses to let me my bosses begged me to craft this little post for our loyal readers. CLICK IT:

When it comes to dressing up for the holidays I like to keep it low key: thematic, but not over the top. So I opted for 2 classic American looks, and topped them with a sun-hat covered in an American Flag Scarf to pull the look together

Look 1: (above) I am wearing a LBD with a fancy ruffled slip. My “southern” or “at the races” look, if you will. (Now where’s my Mint Julep, Y’ALL!?)

Look 2: (below) A plain white tank, denim cutoffs, bikini top, and artfully placed aviators. My “west coast” look. Cowabunga.

And WHERE oh WHERE did I get this FABULOUS AMERICAN FLAG SCARF!?!?, that’s where!

Fabulous Fashion that does not compromise Form and Function – The Summer Design Series Event

An event featuring women, design, fashion, AND a healthy lifestyle? Don’t mind if I do!

Tuesday night I had the honor of attending Ron Robinson and Summer Design Series event, held at his shared Fred Segal’s Melrose location.

Ron Robinson Summer Design Series |

Fred Segal’s shop is simply fabulous,

both on the outside and the inside. From their famous vine-clad exterior walls that line the front to around back where you find Mauro’s italian cafe with punchy chairs and a buzzworthy crowd. (No Kanye this time). Then you step inside through a maze of boutique collections merchandised by the just-as-fab crew. Ok maybe I’m being overzealous, I just moved to LA and haven’t hung out in this “LA scene” much, or maybe it’s because my coworkers are all straight… Either way, can’t you tell I need this atmosphere of eccentricity back in my life?

fred segal | as told by

The event offered free vegetable juice, and free vegetable crackers dipped in a vegetable sauce, oh, and free veggie pizza! Mmmm. Disclaimer: the crust definitely tasted like cardstock, so I can confirm the menu was Gluten Free. *clink* Bottoms up!

So while balancing all things vegetable, and iPhone, in my 2 hands, I managed to snag some photos of the merch and the friendly designers who were sporting their goods. (AND I didn’t get tomato on anything.)

Nesh NYC at Fred Segal |

Next up we have Bree Chambers of Nesh NYC (@neshnyc) and friend Nicole Sciacca of Hustle & Flow Fitness (@hustleflowfit).

Nesh NYC was definitely my favorite line of the night. Chambers flawlessly forms monochrome tones into sleek sporty shapes that perfectly hug and drape the body in an effortlessly chic way. Perfect for yogis going straight from asante-sana-squash-banana to nya-seven-ya. Or you know, for me, the girl who walks to work and lives in DTLA. Also, this is a thing: #NESHING. #loveit

Here’s one of me eyeing that silvery silver leotard. But I mean, just look at my own outfit… I belong in these clothes, no?

lifestyle blogger Lisa Loperfido eyes the Nesh NYC sporty chic apparel at Fred Segal Melrose |

We, the designers and I, discussed the difference of East Coast and West Coast style. Out here activewear is part of our wardrobe staples. What I am wearing is perfectly acceptable for work garb, granted I might need to throw on a chic blazer for a board meeting. While this is the norm for us socal-locals, those glammed out New Yorkers are just starting to adopt our laid-back trend way of life. Here’s a little hint upper-east-siders: well-cut leggings + effortlessly draped silhouettes + simple accessories = YES PUHLEASE. You can thank me later.

To cap off the event,

here’s a photo of Lauren and I being typical girls Social Media Girls. How to Make Your Birkenstock Sandals POP!

sky blue sandals for summer! #DIY

I painted my Birkenstocks sky blue for summer. 🙂 Why did I do this?

Because originally they were taupe nubuck which reminded me too much of human skin, and I didn’t really want to wear flesh on flesh. ((They didn’t look awful, but I just wasn’t having it.)) And being the savvy thrift shopper that I am, I literally found these shoes for $2 at a shop in Oregon (thank you Newberg Friends), so if something went wrong while painting them, I had nothing to lose (yet so much to gain!)

How to Make Your Shoes Pop! Tutorial:

All you need is these 3 essentials:

  • 1 giant blob of happy colored paint
  • 1 pair of boring old shoes (find them at a THRIFT store (Helloooo Salvation Army, Goodwill, or your local thrift)!
  • 1 ordinary paint brush

Now sing along with me while I color my world with the chaos of trouble ♫♪

Every Body is Beautiful, Finally! The New Trend of 2014

This is the first of a series of body image articles I plan on writing. My New Year’s resolution is to be bolder, so I have decided it is time to put my writing out there, to be more open and vulnerable, and to share my insights with you. Thanks for reading – I hope I can inspire a change of mind in anyone who is struggling with their own body image – and this goes for all sizes, big and small. Please share and comment as you see fit. 1/12/14. Lisa Loperfido. @itsa_Lisa
Every Body is Beautiful, Finally! The New Trend of 2014. read about why on itsaLisa.comphoto adapted from

Welcome to 2014, a year where we’ve finally learned to embrace who we are. Or at least getting closer to it. Where the best TV shows are no longer about the young and the beautiful, but more about the reality of life being hard, and self acceptance within it.

The top shows that come to mind are Mindy Kaling’s “The Mindy Project,” Lena Dunham’s “GIRLS,” and Rebel Wilson’s “Super Fun Night.” What do these three shows have in common? They are comedies that poke fun at the reality of life being difficult and awkward. They are sit-coms that follow the lives of 20-somethings as they battle love, career, friendship, and belonging in New York City. There is one more similarity you might have noticed: each show’s director also stars in the series, and yes, the directors are also curvy ladies. Beautiful curvy ladies.

Their weight, while used as a point of humor and a springboard for self-deprecation, is an undeniable truth that helps steer the show in a direction that 2014 is proud to embrace. Or so it should be.

Mindy Kaling, director and star of the Mindy Project, is an adorable curvy Indian girl. And while the show is mainly a sit-com starring Kaling and her New York Medical office co-workers, there’s also a few weight insecurities that surface. In a recent episode she admits to never being naked in front of a man, but the episode resolves in a man telling her she’s beautiful and would be even more so if she would stop “sucking it in.” In a quick scene we see a shot of her back, her back looked hot. Kaling also wears a fresh face of makeup, and really cute, feminine, office-appropriate clothes. The first thing you notice about her is definitely not her weight. Instead you see a hilarious Indian girl, and a hot doctor. While she thinks weight is an issue, weight really should not be an issue. Put plainly, she’s gorgeous.

Same goes for Lena Dunham. I am behind on my viewing of Girls so for fear of sounding like a fool I am only going to state very generic facts. 1. Hannah (Dunham’s character) is not afraid of being naked. 2. If Dunham is ok with her weight, than you should be too. As The Daily Beast puts it: Hate Lena Dunham’s Naked Body? Show us yours. She also wears flirty little dresses, rompers, and clothes that show she doesn’t care what others think, which exudes confidence, because what others think should not matter. From what I’ve seen in tabloids, it is very clear that Dunham looks good on and off the red carpet.

And then there’s our newest star, Rebel Wilson. Brought to light by her aloof role as the roommate in Bridesmaids, stealing the show in Pitch Perfect, and now starring in her own sit-com: Super Fun Night. Wilson’s character Kimmy, is a heavy lawyer facing the daily struggles of life and sit-com worthy affairs. But what I really want to discuss here is her style. Yes, she’s fat, but so what? She wears fun challenging clothes that look good on her because she wears them with confidence. Rebel Wilson and her TV character, posses a bold heroism, the will to succeed and the desire to have a good time… to have a “super fun night.” Her strength to keep pushing, aside from the bashing she gets from others, is motivational. Kimmy uses clever jokes and a bubbling personality to stand out, she also mocks that her boobs are supremely larger than her skinny costar’s, a battle the bigger girl will always win. Kimmy always looks great by styling herself well and taking fashion risks, but what also stands out is her personable charm. By merely being herself she achieves. Do I sound like an American Girl ad or what? But her attitude really is inspiring. Take notes people.

The point that we see trending here is that we are all girls, and we are all fighting similar battles. While the hilarious and curvaceous directors mentioned above are all writing a similar script to a similar story that speaks to our generation, we can conclude something very important:  Looks are OUT, character is IN. What I mean is, these shows are not becoming hits because the cast is made up of Size 00 American Sweethearts (who can also be beautiful and full of character!), but these shows are becoming hits because the cast is GORGEOUS, FUNNY and INTELLIGENT. Their size is completely irrelevant, which makes me proud to be a part of a generation where we can enjoy this kind of entertainment, the kind where you don’t have to look a certain way to be accepted.

Ok so these are just TV shows produced by a team of highly paid professionals, but you can still take their lessons to heart in real life. Remember to be yourself, embrace who you are throughout your daily struggles. Let your own beautiful character shine. No matter what size you are dress for you, be confident, and rock what you’ve got! This is your life, if you’ve been stressing about the pounds (statistics prove that over 80% of you have) than stop! When you embrace your weight and the body you were born with you’ll find life will feel a lot lighter.

I am young 140 pound woman living in the highly judgemental sand trap of Southern California. I believe in living a happy and healthy life, but above all being yourself. I began writing this article as encouragement for myself to resist from obsessing over “the ideal figure” what is ideal anyways? It became something worth sharing. The final takeaway: strive to seek out beauty in everything and do what makes you happy. More on this subject coming soon.

The Better Leather Tassel Keychain Guide #DIY

Leather Tassel Keychains with Bottle Opener | DIY @ itsaLisa.comLike what you see? buy your own on Etsy now! *keep reading for a coupon code*

I love these. They embody Form, Fashion, and Function. Leather Tassel Keychains are the latest look, as made popular by couture leather designers like Coach. But this design of mine, unlike the others, has a bottle opener! Say goodbye to your old crusty bottle opener keychain, and say hello to this fabulous new accessory that looks good, feels good, and will give that bottle cap a lift when you need it most. 😉

Make Your Own

To make one you will need:

  • A Cutting Board
  • Durable Scissors or An Exacto Blade
  • A Ruler
  • A Glue Gun
  • Keychains with Lobster Clip
  • Bottle Opener rings (available on amazon)
  • Leather Scraps – contact your local leathersmith!

Making Leather Tassel Keychains | DIY @

Begin by cutting the leather into sections 4.5″ wide by however long you can get, mine were about 5″ in length.

Once you have the shape of the leather you will want to create the tassels. Cut 1/4″ inch strips into each piece, leaving a remainder of 3/4″ uncut at the top for the ring. You will also want to cut many small 3/4″ wide strips, these will aid you in rolling the leather to fit snug in the ring to slide on.

Making Leather Tassel Keychains | DIY @

To start your keychain cut off one of the 1/4″ tassels. Put one end through the bottom of your lobster clip and glue the raw sides together with your glue gun. Now lay out one of your 3/4″ strips and fuze the leather attached to the keychain into the piece with hot glue. Begin rolling once or twice around, and continue to roll into the tassels. While you’re rolling, be sure each new rotations is flush with the edge so you have a flat roll for perfect form.

Our next step requires patience, and trial and error. All of my different leather scraps had different weights so I could never find “the perfect” length to roll. Instead, continue to add the 3/4″ strip over the wider tassel strips as you roll, until you have enough bulk to fit the bottle opener ring around.

The bottle opener ring should be difficult to get on and fit snugly just over where the tassel marks start on the leather. You will know you have enough leather in the roll when the ring stays in place. If it slides around add more leather, if you can not fit it over the leather you have too much. Add or cut out some of the 3/4″ strips until the fit is just right.

Making Leather Tassel Keychains | DIY @

To make this project your own, have fun with the colors, not all tassels have to be from the same type of leather! Play with your rings, maybe you would rather slide on a fancy cocktail ring for extra flair (the catch – you won’t be able to use it to open a beer). Or you could always ditch the ring and finish the roll  with hot glue to hold it in place.

I would love to hear about your own efforts! Post your photos and thoughts below!
